More bad news

Is it just me or does the media (both print and broadcast) seem more obssessed with bad news than ever before? An odd question from someone that spends his days placing stories in the press but still a question that needs to be asked. It just seems that we’ve now gotten over the doomsday headlines of financial disaster when we’re now confronted with stories of mass unemployment. ‘The worst for 17 years,’ shrilled one headline. Do we really thrive on being told bad news? Is this why we wake up with an ‘alarm,’ rather than ‘a wake up call?’ Alternatively, if a newspaper were to decide to try and focus on good news for a change, would you buy that paper?

Youngest sailor to top record

by kizzi in Stuff we're doing

A British teenager will be leaving from Portsmouth Harbour when he launches a historic bid to become the youngest person to sail around the world single handed – at 16 years old.
You may recall that Michael Perham won a place in the record books two years ago after becoming the youngest person to travel solo across the Atlantic when he was just 14. His crossing was recorded by every newspaper in the world and then British Deputy Prime Minister, John Prescott, described Michael as “a successful sailor in the great British maritime tradition.” Michael now plans to top that accomplishment next month (November) when he sails single handed around the world. His world crossing which will start at Portsmouth’s Gunwharf Quays is set to be the biggest sailing event this decade. It is estimated he will be at sea for four and a half months.
The marina is part of Gunwharf Quays, the South Coast’s leading designer retail outlet, where shoppers will find over 100 lifestyle brands offering up to 70% off high street prices. One of the country’s most sought after berths, the Gunwharf Quays marina has played host to many prestigious events including the Global Challenge Round-the-World Yacht Race, the Volvo Ocean Race, the Round Britain Powerboat Race as well as being the port of choice for many famous voyages from Sir Robin Knox Johnston, Dee Caffari and now Michael Perham.
The world crossing is sponsored by Totallymoney.com, Vocal Link and Skechers, while money raised will be donated to Save the Children and the Tall Ships Youth Trust.
